Guests in black ties, evening gowns and ethnic attire transcend cultures as they form one crowd from 65 nations and are greeted, welcomed and funneled up the stairs toward an elaborate stage. Cameras flash and a contingent of bagpipers in traditional kilts add their unique festivity. Anticipation is palpable.
